Following on from the great news at the end of last year that Anna Calvi had been listed on the BBC Sound of 2011 list, 2011 is now here and today with the release of Anna’s self titled debut album in UK & Europe on Domino everyone can finally hear the record that’s gotten so many people excited.
Having played a series of acclaimed live dates, signing with Domino Records, and bolstered by the support of music legends like Nick Cave and Brian Eno, 2010 was definitely a good year for Anna, but it’s all been in support of the album she co-produced with Rob Ellis and recorded in France and London. In keeping with the mystery and intrigue that surrounds Anna’s art, we’ll avoid the hyperbole and let people discover for themselves just how special and evocative this record really is, a sentiment which has been mirrored in the initial reviews:
NME – This self titled collection of 10 songs is perhaps the first great record of 2011. 9/10
MOJO – From the off, ‘Anna Calvi’ rises above the instant gratification kick of so much contemporary music. At every turn, there are subtleties, whispers, shadowy impulses, counterbalancing unbridled orchestral passages, and the tumult of that voice. 4*
Uncut – This isn’t just a great debut. It’s a fearless rejection of current pop trends, fashioning a benchmark of intensity and originality that the rest of this year’s albums will struggle to match. 4*
